Turkey Deploys “Patriot” Missile Defense System in Central Region Following Latest Iranian Missile

Turkey announced on Tuesday that a Patriot missile defense system is being deployed in the country’s central region, one day after NATO intercepted a second ballistic missile launched by Iran into Turkish airspace.

“Necessary measures are being taken for the security of our borders and airspace, with consultations ongoing with NATO and our allies. In addition to national-level measures, NATO has reinforced its air and missile defense posture,” the Ministry of Defense said in a statement, according to foreign media reports cited by Telegrafi.

“As part of this effort, a designated Patriot system to support the defense of our airspace is being deployed in Malatya.”

Located in central Turkey, Malatya is home to the Kurecik Air Base, a key facility operated by U.S. forces that hosts a NATO early warning radar capable of detecting Iranian missile launches.

Although Ankara has categorically denied that radar data has ever been used to assist Israel, its presence has unsettled Tehran.

The missile deployment comes a day after NATO intercepted Iran’s second missile, prompting Washington to close its consulate in the southern city of Adana and urge all American citizens to leave southeastern Turkey.

In addition to Kurecik, U.S. forces are also stationed at Incirlik Air Base, another key NATO facility just 10 kilometers (six miles) outside Adana. Kurecik lies about 350 kilometers northeast.

Since the start of the U.S.-Israel war against Iran, Tehran has launched attacks across the Middle East. Apart from these two incidents in five days, Turkey “appears to have been spared.”

After the first ballistic missile was intercepted over Turkish airspace on March 4, NATO stated it had strengthened its “ballistic missile defense posture across the alliance,” without providing operational details for security reasons.

The Incirlik and Kurecik bases are highly sensitive sites in Turkey, with authorities arresting three journalists for “violating national security” after filming near Incirlik only hours after the Iranian attacks began.
