US Lawmakers Warn Against Reducing US Troops in Kosovo A group of American congressmen and senators has sent a letter to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressing concern over reports that the administration of Donald Trump may consider reducing US troops in Kosovo as part of the NATO-led peacekeeping mission. The lawmakers warned that any premature reduction of US forces could undermine stability not only in Kosovo but also across the wider Western Balkans region. According to the letter, maintaining the current presence of US troops in Kosovo is essential at a time when the region continues to face political tensions and external influence. The Strategic Importance of NATO’s KFOR Mission The letter highlights the key role played by the NATO-led peacekeeping mission KFOR since its establishment in 1999 following United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244. Lawmakers emphasized that US troops in Kosovo remain an important deterrent against potential instability and violence. Currently, the United States contributes around 500 soldiers to the KFOR mission, which consists of approximately 5,000 troops in total. According to the letter, this presence carries significant strategic weight and plays a crucial role in preventing escalation between Kosovo and Serbia. Concerns About Regional Destabilization American lawmakers warned that reducing US troops in Kosovo could weaken the political and military credibility of KFOR. They stressed that such a move might encourage actors who see a reduced Western presence as an opportunity to promote destabilizing agendas. The letter specifically highlighted concerns about developments in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Lawmakers pointed to the separatist rhetoric of Milorad Dodik, the leader of the entity Republika Srpska, who has repeatedly challenged the constitutional order of Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to the letter, even the perception of a withdrawal of US troops in Kosovo could embolden nationalist movements and increase the risk of political and security crises in the region. Russia’s Influence in the Western Balkans The lawmakers also warned about the destabilizing role of Russia in the Western Balkans. They stated that Moscow has repeatedly attempted to exploit divisions in the region and weaken the influence of both NATO and the European Union. Maintaining US troops in Kosovo, according to the letter, remains a key element in countering these geopolitical challenges. Call for Coordination With Congress Finally, the lawmakers urged the United States Department of State to clarify the potential security implications of any decision to reduce military presence. They emphasized that any changes regarding US troops in Kosovo should be closely coordinated with the US Congress. The letter was signed by several prominent lawmakers, including Michael R. Turner, Brendan F. Boyle, Gregory W. Meeks, Rick Larsen, Jeanne Shaheen, Charles Grassley, Thom Tillis, Roger Wicker, Ann Wagner, Chris Van Hollen, Joni Ernst and Peter Welch. /Zëri i Drenices/ Related PostsRaportohet për datën e fundit të luftës...
