A ballistic missile launched from Iran and heading toward Turkish airspace was intercepted and destroyed mid-air, according to a statement from Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defense. The missile reportedly passed through the airspace of Iraq and Syria before entering the eastern Mediterranean zone, where it was neutralized by NATO air defense systems. No casualties or injuries have been reported. The ministry emphasized that Türkiye remains fully capable of defending its territory and citizens against any threat, regardless of its origin. “While Türkiye stands for regional stability and peace, it is fully capable of defending its territory and its citizens, regardless of the source or origin of any threat.” Officials stressed that all necessary measures would be taken decisively and without hesitation to safeguard national airspace. “Our right to respond to any hostile act directed at our country remains reserved. We call on all parties to refrain from actions that could further escalate the conflict in the region.” Ankara confirmed it will hold consultations with NATO and other allied partners following the incident. The interception marks the latest escalation in a rapidly expanding regional conflict. Prior to the outbreak of direct hostilities between the United States and Israel against Iran, Türkiye — a NATO member and neighbor of Iran — had repeatedly urged both Washington and Tehran to reach a diplomatic agreement during negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program and missile capabilities, warning that the region could not withstand further destabilization. The conflict intensified quickly after initial strikes on Iran over the weekend. Tehran subsequently targeted Gulf states hosting U.S. military bases, while Israel carried out attacks against Iran-backed Hezbollah positions in Lebanon.
